Kathy Griffin and President Donald J. Trump

Whither Kathy Griffin and the head! Don’t look for the head here. Or for any references to stories about it, for reasons which will become evident in short order.

President Donald J. Trump told us two weeks ago that “[n]o politician in history—and I say this with great surety—has been treated worse or more unfairly.” Uh, OK. If we ignore your bullsh*t claims about where your predecessor was born. If we ignore the decision by the Republican Congress to fight President Obama at every turn, in an attempt to make him a one-term president and, after he was re-elected, to interfere with his legislative agenda in unprecedented ways. And—because we all work in threes, mostly—if we ignore your party preventing Judge Merrick Garland, President Obama’s nominee for the vacant seat on the U.S. Supreme Court, from getting a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing or an up or down vote by the Senate.

Then, of course, there are the two-bit hangers on among the Rs. Take Ted Nugent, for example. This sorry-ass excuse for a human being, slightly more than 10 years ago, threatened to kill candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Still, Mr. POS walks the streets, freely. (I assume the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies decided he was just “Ted being Ted.”)

So, President Trump, and with great respect for your surety, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Only a highest order narcissist can reach the conclusion that you have been treated worse, or more unfairly, than anyone else. You have given more to your predecessor than you’re getting, for sure.

Your term will end, Mr. President, and it will probably end long before noon on January 20, 2021. I expect that your successor will be wise enough not to grant you a pardon, for I’m sure his biggest concern will be getting elected in 2020. (Vice President Pence, see President Gerald Ford, whose jock strap you couldn’t carry.) So, Mr. President, you might want to be preparing for new digs, less commodious than those to which you have become accustomed.

Rant aside, I’m back to Kathy Griffin. Shame on you, Ms. Griffin, and go away, please! (Maybe you and Ted Nugent can find a place in California, where you can fight and scream and do whatever else comes to mind.) I take my country seriously. People who told me they voted for Donald Trump because it was time to “mix it up a little”—I heard this phrase 3X, I kid you not—make my head spin. And I think Ted Nugent should have been arrested, indicted, and tried. I may be wrong, but I think millions of others agree with me.

Alas, the Ted Nugents and Kathy Griffins* in this world don’t get arrested, indicted, and tried. They’re provacateurs. They do what they do for attention and, most likely, to help their careers. (Think Donald J. Trump, advancing the birther claims.) But regular people like me don’t want to be defending Kathy Griffin’s disgusting photo. We want the Rs to own Ted Nugent and his fellow travelers, whose odious understanding of America and democracy leaves tens of millions cold. We don’t want opportunities for “everyone does it” claims. You do us no favors, Kathy Griffin. Stop. Please.

I fear for our republic. We will see Donald J. Trump’s backside—no snide comments, please, for I already considered them—walking away from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. When? Who knows, but as soon as possible, as bad as the Vice President may be. What will be left when he leaves? Who knows? In the meantime, anyone who cares about our country should be focused on bringing us back to a time, not so long ago, when people disagreed without being disagreeable, … much less hinting—or more—at the death of those they disliked.

*In Trump-world, where l’etat c’est moi, Ms. Griffin should maybe be a little bit concerned.
