Renewal: Spring, Passover, Easter, and News

renewal

Mark Rubin

My favorite weekend of the year is upon us. Passover and Easter are joined at the hip, along with Spring. I’m amazed—and I digress, briefly—that some of my nominally Christian friends don’t link the Seder and the Last Supper. Forgive me, but do people think Mary and Joe’s boy—well maybe not Joe’s boy completely, but that biology is way above my pay grade—was passing on the Seder? Alas, there’s actually a debate … because, in these times, we can always debate everything.*

Renewal? Sure. The Passover story focuses completely on the opportunity to leave slavery in Egypt, for the promised land in Israel. And Easter? Duh! And, candidly, I think all of it is all so much hoo-ha. But that’s just me, and so much of this has worked for so many, so who am I to say?

News? Hush up for a moment, while I digress again.

We’ll be having a Passover Seder on Saturday evening. Between 10 and 20 people will attend, and four people in attendance two years ago—Bob, Harriet, Michael, and Rochelle—will not be among us. Two years. Four people. And, since the latter part of 2015 Anne, Floyd, Jean, Joan, Lowell, and Steven—all of them major forces in my life, directly or indirectly, at one time or another—have also passed.

Hellacious comes to mind: Ten people who mattered to me in about 2-1/2 years. Gone. All of them. Still. I’m as lucky as anyone I know, truly. I want for nothing that matters to me. My work leaves me indoors, mostly, and my hands are smooth and soft. And I love the people with whom I interact. And I think that when my corporeal time ends, many will remember me fondly. (I’m an attorney, so “many” feels aspirational. But, if we’re not aspiring, are we living?)

Lucky aside, dealing with the death stuff sucks. We’re all expected to Keep Calm and Carry On, and if I had an asset base like that of the British Royals maybe that would be easy. Or not. Recall annus horibilis. I manage, but I’d like for there to be a moratorium on bad news. I’m tired, and I wish for more mitzvas than funerals.

Bad news? News? News! Come Monday, Rubin & Bernstein PLLC exists. The name partners are not speaking right now … for one of us sounds like Kermit on a really awful day (laryngitis it is), but we’re off and running. Stay tuned for details, along with a link soon to our new website. In the meantime, I can be reached at 520.798.3803 or mark@markrubinlaw.com, and you can call Leigh at 520.623.3038, or email her at leigh@barriolaw.com. (By the time you call we should both have our voices.)

Enjoy Spring and this time for renewal. (For those who know me, I jumped the swimming pool shark and dove in this evening, pre-4/1. The pool and I have a deal: I keep it filled, and it stays warm for me between April 1 and October 31.) Enjoy the Pesach and Easter. Love those with whom you share your life, and in this season, never forget Matthew 25:35:

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to eat, I was a stranger and you invited me in.
